As we close August and move into September, we would like to focus on our last look at mindset using the 20/20 analogy. Did you know that 20/20 vision does not mean perfect vision? Rather than testing for perfection, it instead tests for clarity and sharpness. Using the 20/20 analogy, let’s get a clear and succinct vision of our risk for chronic illness and HOW we can change our mindset to improve our physical health.
Many of us have had a change of focus and perspective this year which may have shifted our attitudes about wellness, priorities, chronic illness, acute illness, responsibility and more. Now more than ever, it’s time to dial in the lens and find clarity on what, why, and how you can do to improve your total well-being. While behavior change is certainly complicated, the industry likes to simplify the process by focusing and addressing three key areas: knowledge, skill and attitude. It’s also important to recognize that the healthy choice needs to be the easy choice, so environment and accessibility is crucial––Lucky for us, we CAN control most of our personal space (environment). While some knowledge and skill may be necessary, the biggest motivator for most people is attitude. Mindset is an established SET of attitudes––so let’s do some attitude adjustment! Try focusing on the positives, such as:
I GET to move.
I choose healthy fuel for my body.
I choose a positive attitude daily.
I work to reduce my stress.
Genes vs. Lifestyle: It’s important to note that up to 84% of all deaths are lifestyle related. The prevalence of obesity, one of the largest indicators for chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, has increased from 30.5% in 2000 to 42.4% as recorded in the 2017-2018 NCHS data. Additionally, the average intake of calories has increased by 400 since 1983! Everyone’s body reacts differently, but just 100 calories more than we need per day equals an extra 10 pounds of weight gain per year––400 calories would mean the greater percentage of our population is 40 pounds overweight by the age of 40! Research indicates that the upcoming generations will be even heavier right out of college. Shocking statistics like this really allows us to stop and think of just how much of a role genes and lifestyle play in our risk for chronic illness.
